Godfrey's GenCon 2015 Video Tour

Hey guys, and welcome back.  instead of the usual article I would normally write, I thought I'd do something a bit different this year and give you guys a video to enjoy.  It's by no means all encompassing and I know it's very long.  But for those of you who stick it out, there are some little extras I threw in during editing (if nothing else check out 14:45).

I hope you guys enjoy the video.  Hopefully next year I'll have one a little more planned and streamlined prepared for you.  But if nothing else, here are a few pictures I snapped along the way.

RoBPod #26: Campaign Event

Just a week ago, Godfrey, Havoc, UltimateDave and myself all got the opportunity to attend a campaign style event, hosted by Battle Mallet Games in Martinsville. For most of us, this was the first big, organized 40k event we had been to since college events at Game Preserve Bloomington. We all ha d alot of thoughts and feelings about the event, and decided to talk about how the game plays in practice rather than in theory for a change.

Battle Report X

Welcome everyone to the relaunching of our Battle Report Series.  Though this series has laid dormant for quite some time, I have been putting as much work into breathing some new life into the series as I could.  We hope you guys enjoy the battle, as it not only offers our usual Battle Report style, but also a bit more.  The game was meant to test the theory of how increasing the points total played could alleviate the power of certain units and increase the enjoyment of the game for both players.

This is a longer video, but the latter half could be considered more of a video cast as Corvus and I review what we found during our test.  Battle Reports in the future will be much shorter in general, but we hope you enjoy both halves of this relaunch!

Cheers!

RoBPod #22: Khorne Daemonkin

Havoc joins Godfrey and I for this especially red edition of the podcast. The three of us talk about Khorne Daemonkin, including what it does to buff out the assault phase, compensate for Khorne hating stupid magic, and allow for unique ways for players to spend more money! Likewise, make sure to check out our associated reference links.

Imperial Overload in the Grim Darkness

Well well, welcome back to Rites.  I find it quite amazing that folks were able to get here given how many new releases and distractions there are these days.  Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely grateful that the game flourishes enough to merit expansion.  And before you begin to roll you eyes instead of the dice, I promise this article isn't beating down the idea of how much is being added. While yes it does make for a complex set of things to remember, the ever expanding volume of content does provide us several new ways to build our own experience.

RobPod 20: They're Back!

In the Grim Dark caverns of the Grim Dark worlds, in the Grim Dark Universe of 40k, they awaken. They have risen once again to lay claim to the universe, and the top-tier spot of the tournament scene! Welcome back folks to this installment of the RobPod - our review of the new Codex: Necrons! This new codex clocks in at an impressively balanced level of "really damn good, but just this side of broken (mostly)." So join Corvus and I as we bend over and take it up the... *cough* review the codex!

Warning... this is a long cast.  Long Cast is loooooooooooong. So be sure you get plenty of booze, and be ready to drink.

Cheers!

LexVerum Astartes VII: The Armoury - Grenades, Special Issue, and Wargear Special Rules

After a long absence, I finally had some time to put the finishing touches on the balance and functionality of this rather arduous section of the codex, and then put the pen to the paper... or in this case, the mouse to the photoshop!  Finally I have rounded out the Armoury section for the codex, and with it, there was quite a bit left to cover.  From minor elements many of us take for granted, such as grenades, to the intricate details of the numerous weapons and wargear, it's all here.

If you have time to read it all, it was a labor of love.  Most of the items in the codex work slightly differently than what we expect when we read names like Storm Shield or Power Weapons. Things range from slight tweaks to major re-works based on the power level I think would keep the super charged Tru-Scale Marines in check.  The most fun was the final section which hits the unique special rules to the codex.  Some of them are pretty straightforward ports of rules found in the standard codex, with some tweaks to numbers here and there.  But I needed them here in order to keep the codex self-sufficient (no lazy "Consult Codex: Adeptus Astartes" here.  It's all spelled out for you, or is covered in the BRB).  The rules unique to this codex were fun, and should add some added weight to these guys, making them a real challenge, even with their extremely low model count.

In any event, here's the finishing touches to the Tru-Scale Armoury!  You may notice I have tweaked some of the format, such as title fonts.  This should make the codex easier to read, while still having some nice aesthetics.

Intergalactic Toys Hits Indy

Hey folks, welcome back.  So continuing my unplanned stint away from the Grim Dark, I come today bearing more of a news spot and review rather than my usual observations and musings.  Recently a friend of mine had asked me "Hey... wanna go to this new toy store here in town?"  Me being the ever-poor, but nerd that I am couldn't resist the urge to check out a toy store.  My original mindset was that I would go and take a look around, but probably not buy anything.  Money is tight these days. And yet I still failed spectacularly not to buy something...

A Quick Thought on Dungeon Mastering (DM'ing)

Hi folks, time to change gears for a moment and talk about something outside of the Grim Dark. Recently I started putting together some elements for a D&D campaign which takes inspiration from several sources, and mixes them together into the core ideas that make up the setting and the mechanics for my party.  One of my favorite parts of Dungeon Mastering is the sheer freedom of creation available to you before you even have the party members selected.  Creating a world, often from scratch, is such a test of creativity that I find fascinating each time I delve into it.  I myself tend to take bitz and pieces from one source or another and merge them into a whole new universe for my players.  While this can have it's own challenges, it can often have heightened rewards.  But it's a delicate balancing act no matter which way you slice it.

This campaign marks the first one I have officially run in quite some time, and if you don't count the last one, which was more or less a last minute decision, it's been a solid few years since I have had the joy of putting together a full blown campaign of my own.  But unlike my previous adventures into the realm of DM'ing, I thought I'd challenge myself with something different this time, and it's the source of my thoughts here.  The challenge is that while I have put together a fair number of background elements and an exhaustibly large amount of time into mechanics alterations (which I feel are necessary for any DM wanting to introduce their players to a unique world of their own creation), I intend to run this game off the cuff.  Sessions won't be planned, nor will the layouts of buildings or the consistency of enemy ranks for combat.  With the exception of a lose, somewhat ad-hock plot that will be seen more and more as the game progresses, the goal here is to produce a game without really planning ahead.  It's an endurance test of pure imagination, where the possibilities, and of course the pitfalls, are endless.

But before I go on, I want to stop for a moment and compare these styles of Dungeon Mastering, both of which I have utilized to some extend or another.  However, no matter what conclusion I reach, or the pros and cons I find with each... I don't think there is a right way to DM.  These methodologies of approach will not fit everyone's taste, as everyone will tweak things differently for a variety of reasons.  I'm merely presenting the methods I have used over my many campaigns, and commenting on what I enjoyed and didn't care for along the way.  So with that, let's jump behind the screen and see what awaits us there.

Podcast #15 - The Orkiest Codex Review!

Oi Ya Gitz!  Godfrey here bringing with me the Orkiest book 40k has for our newest codex review. Not unlike the Grim Dark, Orks is here ta stay, and so with my love for the army finally able to be shown by playing the army, I think it's only fair to let you guys know what I think about the codex.  It's a roller coaster of thoughts from ranging from the high notes to the low notes of the book.  I do go on a little at the beginning about 7th edition codex mechanics as it was the first of the new style, but I do take it to review the book more or less cover to cover.  So grab a brewski and listen up as I review the Bestest Codex!

Cheers!

Catching Up, and Making Progress

Hey there everyone, Godfrey here with something of a personal update for you guys.  Most of the articles I write are written with the express idea of discussing something about this or that, but I thought I'd take some time to gather my progress on the many fronts I've been facing in the Grim Darkness of my Hobby time, and form them into words.  It helps me as a writer and a hobbyist to catalog my achievements and to work out meaningful steps towards future goals, and hopeful provides you guys with something to occupy your time with.  So why the picture of Liam Neeson to start off with an article like that?  Well apart from being one of my favorite actors, this picture depicts the namesake of my screen name.  It's from the film Kingdom of Heaven, and if you haven't seen it check it out.  There are numerous little nuances and elements about the character which really hit home for me, so I strive to be more like him in my everyday games... even if the Ork player in me is a bit over-zealous to speak broken English and yell a lot.  But on with the show.  Let's see what's been going on, and where it will take me.

Out of our Element: Wild West Exodus

Howdy there pardners, and welcome to the first of two articles teased in my GenCon review, an assessment of Wild West Exodus. As hinted at earlier, this is a game that I'd heard talked up a lot in the local area, and when I stumbled across their booth, I was actually, for the first time in my life, drawn in by something with a steampunk aesthetic. Was my visit rewarded? Hit the jump and find out!

Lex Verum Astartes VI: The Armoury - Armour

Welcome to the next installment of my Tru-Scale project.  Today we'll cover something which more or less defines a Space Marine both in aesthetic and durability.  The various types of armour which the Adeptus Astartes wear may differ in their design, color, and even shape.  But they all serve to keep them alive long enough to pass judgment on the enemies of mankind.  That said, I have always been a little underwhelmed by their staying power on today's battlefields of the grim dark.

Lex Verum Astartes V: The Armoury - Melee Weapons

Welcome back folks.  As promised, this time around we're hitting the armoury for the melee weapons of the Tru-Scale Space Marines.  While there isn't nearly as much here as our previous installment in terms of quantity, it does help us establish just how powerful the Space Marines will be in close quarters fighting.

I tried to make a very clear distinction between basic weaponry, chain weaponry, and power weapons.  The Energy Field rule will be revealed at the end of the armoury, but it does promise to make the high price point for purchasing them worth the investment.  Next up in the armoury will be the amour section.  While in the current incarnation of the Space Marine codex it's more or less a brush-over, armour in this book does more than offer a save.  But, that's another installment.  For now, Enjoy!
