Happy Birthday Rites!

In other news; is it cheesecake?
Greetings Gentlereaders,

This monday was  our fourth birthday here at Rites of Battle.  All our lives, inside and outside the hobby, have changed quite a bit since then.  We've moved out of the basement and try to make a respectable blog out of our site.  We've moved out of the dorms and have our own fortress-monastery.  Corvus has joined our writing staff while Dramatt and Ishmael are busy in graduate school.  I've taken up a few different armies over that time, and found that there are some good people out there on the internet.

I'm glad that you follow this blog and that most of you read most of the posts, some multiple times, but there's no point to us spouting off non-sense without knowing what you think.  I've learned from you all and I've enjoyed hearing new perspectives on the game while the gaming scene in Muncie dwindles.  We want to hear from you, what you hear, what you think, what you would like to know.  But we weren't gifted (or cursed) to be psykers, so we rely on you to comment and let us know what's going on  with you.

If you are a regular commenter, please tell us why you choose to comment.  If you aren't a regular commenter, please tell us why you don't choose to comment.  We want to make this blog enjoyable for you as well as for us and want to know what would make this more enjoyable for you.

I'm Underground Heretic and I get to live with that every day.

  1. Don't forget about the ever-important The Son of Horus being a regular writer too! haha

  2. I like that this blog is local, and that the perspectives are on all sorts of units. Fair or not, some of the others in the state seem to have a bit of a WAAC/hyper-competitive tourney-focus.

    1. I've always found that attitude to be extremely unfortunate. This is a hobby game, and it's really not designed for that kind of cut-throat gameplay. That attitude is damaging to gaming communities, off-putting to stores (likely because it's damaging to gaming communities, who are the ones who buy the product), and generally missing the point of the game, in my opinion. Tournaments are fun because you get to play three games with opponents you likely don't normally get to play, kill some time on a saturday, and hang out. And if you win, then that's great, but it's not something you should focus on at the exclusion of all else, and particularly not at the exclusion of other people having a good time. I've found the win at all costs attitude particularly ruins everyone else's day, and that's really the worst part about it, I think. I tend to point those kinds of gamers to things like Magic the Gathering, because card games like that are actually designed for cut-throat competitive gaming (or douchebaggery, as I prefer to call it-- you are, after all, being a douchebag if you're playing a game in an ultra-competitive way. The key word is "play," after all) whereas Warhammer really isn't. Armies tend to be balanced with the realization that tournaments are popular events, but the game itself has enough abstractions in it (such as measuring with a tape measure, something easy enough to make mistakes with) that it just isn't a good competitive mechanism.

    2. A. I'm glad you enjoy the local flavor, I think we'll be trying to get a battle report up at least monthly starting in February. I'll try to bring up those overlooked units more. I enjoy a tourney or two myself, but that's mainly for the variety of players and catching up with Horus, et. al.

  3. Never commented before, and should count as a fairly recent addition to the flock of readers...

I mostly enjoy the clear and transparent writing and the apparent love for the hobby. I actually take some of these things to heart and change up my gaming style to validate your tips and tricks. Thanks!

  4. Keep the comments coming! I'm very happy to hear some of these topics, such as transparency and the concept of considering all units. These are concepts that I enjoy talking about, and I am glad to see at least some people out there like to read about it :D.

If you guys have anything you'd like to see or read more on, remember there is always the chance to let us know with the "Reader's Choice" articles. Check out the section to the left for more information on how to get involved with that :).
