State of My Game

Most appropriate image I could think of
Greetings Gentlereaders,

It's been a while, but grad school has me doing enough reading and writing on my computer that I don't always get in a game, much less write about anything I don't have to.  Far from abandoning the blog, I've been trying to deepen my understanding of WM/H and playing Cygnar been doing a lot to help with that.  I'll be trying to give an impression of my experiences with each of my armies and the systems they exist within.  I'm still somewhat a journeyman with regards to both, but I'm learning more and thought it best to share that experience with you all.  Maybe there's something you hadn't considered that it will bring to light, maybe there's something I haven't seen that you can point out to me.  But enough talk, have at you!

Battle Report XI

Welcome to another Battle Report!  This time it's a wild and crazy 3,000 point per player battle where Orks but heads against the forces of Chaos.  For starters, we got to play on the amazing Istvaan table, which was designed for a massive battle at it's core.  Even though our armies pale in comparison to the scale (and beauty) of those it was intended for, it was a fast paced game.

I brought my Orks to bear against another local from my FLGS, and while it was a harsh match, he was a most enjoyable foe all the way to the bitter..... bitter end.  So sit back and enjoy the carnage!  I didn't have a copy of his list to put here, but I can give you the jist of both forces:

Battle Report X

Welcome everyone to the relaunching of our Battle Report Series.  Though this series has laid dormant for quite some time, I have been putting as much work into breathing some new life into the series as I could.  We hope you guys enjoy the battle, as it not only offers our usual Battle Report style, but also a bit more.  The game was meant to test the theory of how increasing the points total played could alleviate the power of certain units and increase the enjoyment of the game for both players.

This is a longer video, but the latter half could be considered more of a video cast as Corvus and I review what we found during our test.  Battle Reports in the future will be much shorter in general, but we hope you enjoy both halves of this relaunch!

Cheers!

Lessons Learned: Pain and Suffering

Greetings Gentlereaders,

Today I'm going to tell you about my latest loss in Warmachine and how exactly it's helping me try to stretch my understanding of my first and favorite caster: Master Tormentor Morghoul.  I got to play a game against Iron Lich W from the Advanced Maneuvers crew and ended up getting losing in a useful manner.  In the post game discussion, W, Snarkie and I discussed where I could have improved and I found out that I had been radically undervaluing my feat and how it could be applied to the situation.  I'll be providing links to Battle College if there's any rules you aren't familiar with.  Hopefully we can both learn from this loss.

The Last Hurrah of 6th: 5/17 & 5/18 Tournament Reports

Hello hello hello readers, I come today with a jubilant and triumphant spring in my step, for I bear news of the last gasp of 6th edition. With it comes reports from each side of the rules, both as a player and as an event organizer. So, with that in mind, we will begin a chronological progression, first with Bloomington's monthly throwdown, with me as a player, and then to Columbus's first tournament in over a year, which I orchestrated. Hit the break for the full details.

Reports from the Chili Waaagh!

So a big shout out to all the guys who made it to the Chili Waaagh! this past Saturday.  I can't remember ever having a more pleasant experience with 40k, and I didn't even bring that much (model wise).

For those of you unfortunate enough to have not been there, this was a themed Apocalypse event, forming and following a narrative of a massive Ork Waaagh that slammed into an Imperial planet.  With the Guard forces utterly crushed or routed, several Space Marine chapters, and a Legion Invigilata Warlord Titan responded to the Distress Beacon.  The Orks had crafted not only several Stompas, including a Shock Attack Stompa, but had created a foul titanic monstrosity classified as a Gargant.

The Facebook page leading up to the event was amazing.  Several in-character responses and discussions from both factions' commanders, and showing up to the event and seeing most everything painted was amazing.  I loved the table, the scenario and the people.  A great time was had by all.  Special thanks to Johnny McGinnis for hosting the event.  I look forward to coming down for the next Waaagh!

Below are a ton of pictures taken from the event.

Battle Report: Dark Eldar vs Death Korps

Hey there folks.  Along with the new year coming up I have a new project forming in the dark corners of my apartment.  I recently rejoined the dark brethren of the webway and started a new army of Dark Eldar.  I leaped at the chance to not only play some of my favorite models in the GW line, but to also do some large scale conversions.  So far I've had some fun converting the warriors and even some Incubi, and I have plans for more down the road.

However, I wanted to get used to their style of play again, as well as have fun with a new approach to running my Imperial Guard.  So I thought I'd try both at once and challenge myself to see what I could do to out-think myself.  It's a fun method to re-evaluate one's own perceptions of their army.  So I decided to battle myself, man-o e... well same man-o.

Battle Report IX

Points: 1850
Mission: The Scouring
Set Up: Dawn of War (Old Pitched Battle)

Godfrey and Warmaster Havok battle to the death in the ruins of a once great Hive City.  With speed being the key to victory, Havok's Tau look to the aid of the Eldar to halt the advance of the Imperial Guard.  With little to no reserve troops, the Imperial Guard are forced to utilize their less than savory units to establish a vanguard.

Six Objectives placed around the battlefield.  Havok receives first set-up and turn, but the turn is seized by Godfrey.  Find out who will lead their forces to victory!

Cheers!

Battle Report VIII

Points: 800
Mission: Implacable Advance (Battle Missions)
Set Up: Mission Specific (Battle Missions)

The war for Bakka rages ever on.  With full on assaults made by both the Tau and Necron forces, the defenses of the planet's orbit were no match for the onslaught.  The weakest point of the planetary defenses lay on the northern fringes of the planet.  This is where the Necrons first stuck.  With the unusually fast penetration of the planet's atmosphere, the Krieg 33rd was unprepared for the assault.

Now the Necrons make their move southward.  Also managing to slip onto the planet was one of O'Shova's more capable commanders.  Utilizing advanced stealth technologies, the Tau make a swift ambush on the Implacable Advance of the Necron host.

What will become of the battle, and what does it spell for the fate of the Bakkan Campaign?  Only time will tell.

Cheers!

Battle Report VII

Here's a 2000 point match up between Black Legion Dave and myself. We played Seize Ground with 3 objectives on Spearhead Deployment. Was a really great game. Hope you all enjoy.

As a quick edit note, I forgot to mention the Carnifexes all had Adrenal Glands as well. I4 on the charge ftw.

Battle Report VI

We thought it had been much too long since our last battle report. So the wrong has been remedied.

A 1750 Annihilation on Pitch Battle set up with Warmaster Havok and Corvus proved to be a close game. Hope you guys enjoy.

Cheers!

Battle Report V: Three-for-All!

First I would like to apologize for the quality. Youtube wanted to compress everything to microscopic proportions... but it's the best I could do.

It was a fun little game between the three of us. As you will need to know for our homebrew codex, these are the experimental rules for the special units pertaining to Jacob's "Blood Raven" codex.

Gabriel Angelos
WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
6 5 4 4 3 5 4 10 2+
Unit Composition
1 (Unique)

Unit Type
Infantry

Special Rules

And They Shall Know No Fear, Chapter Tactics, Independent Character.

Chapter Tactics: If you include Gabriel Angelos, all non-vehicle units add a close combat weapon to their existing wargear, as Angelos believes a sounds army is one that can handle fights at range, and in close quaters.

Honored Commander: Such is the awe that the brothers of the chapter hace for Angelos, they fight on through even the worst of odds in his pressense. Any unit with a model within 6" of Gabriel Angelos adds +1 to their attack characteristic.

Tactical Expertise: A good commander knows how to rally his troops effectivly and efficiently. Once per player turn, a friendly non-vehicle unit within 18" of Angelos may gain one of the following benefits.

Add +1 to their leadership value (to a maximum of 10) until the beginning of their next turn.
Reroll a failed or passed leadership, moral, or pinning test.
May regroup even if their is an enemy model within 6".

Wargear
The Raven's Crest, God-Splitter, Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krak Grenades, Iron Halo

God-Splitter: This is a powerful Daemonhammer gifted to Gabriel Angelos of the Blood Ravens 3rd Company by Inquisitor Mordecai Toth. It counts as a Master Crafted Thunder Hammer that adds an addition D6 to its armor penetration rolls. Additionally, if fighting against a Daemon, Angelos strikes at initiative order.

The Raven's Crest: This is a suit of artificer armor that allows Angelos to reroll one failed armor save per game.

Sergeant Tarkus (Upgrade Sergeant)
WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
4 4 4 4 1 4 2 10 3+
Unit Composition
1 (Unique)

Unit Type
Infantry

Special Rules
And They Shall Know No Fear

Tactical Advance: Knowing the codex as if it were his own words, Tarkus has perfected the art of the Tactical Advance. At the beginning of the Blood Ravens movement phase, Tarkus may take a leadership test, if he passes then the squad gains the Slow and Purposeful and Fell No Pain universal special rules until the beginning of the next Blood Ravens turn.

Wargear
Power Armor, Bolt Pistol, Boltgun, Frag and Krak grenades

Lexicanum Battle Squad
WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
4 4 4 4 1 4 1 9 3+
Unit Composition
3 - 10

Unit Type
Infantry

Special Rules

And They Shall Know No Fear

Combined Knowledge: The Lexicanum Battle squads are all proficient with at least some psychic powers. Raising their number increases their abilities in battle. The Lexicanum Battle Squad is treated as knowing all of the Blood Ravens psychic powers. For every 3 member alive in the squad, the unit may cast an addition psychic power per turn.

The Unbound Blood of the Raven: This is an awe inspiring attack made by the squad in unison. The Lexicanum Battle Squad may choose to forgo any other psychic attempts (including casting psychic powers, using force weapons, and psychic hoods) until the beginning of their next turn. If they do, the unit makes a single powerful shooting attack with the following profile
Range Strength AP Type
18" * 1 Heavy 1, Pinning, Large Blast

Roll to scatter, but do not reduce the roll using ballistic skill. Instead, each member of the squad must choose to either bolster the strength, or increase the accuracy of the attack. Therefore, before the attack is made, each member of the squad must choose one of the following actions
Increase the strength of the attack by 1.
Reduce the scatter of the roll by 1.

Wargear
Power Armor, Bolt Pistol, Force Weapon, Psychic Hood, Frag and Krak grenades

Options
The squad may take up to 7 addition members at 25 points per model.

Vehicle Upgrades
Psychic Disruption Launchers: This item is a 10 upgrade that replaces the standard smoke launchers.

Disrupting the area around the vehicle with psychic energy, the vehicle is encased in a shadowed shell from the warp itself. Any penetrating hits are treated as glances until the beginning of the next owning player's turn.

Psychic Powers

The Raven Strike
Range Strength AP Type
18" n/a* - Assault 1
Target an enemy model within 18". The model suffers a single hit that wounds on a 2+, allowing saves. If the target is killed by this ability, before removing the model, place a small blast marker centered on that model. All models (except the victim) under or partial under the blast suffer a wound on a 4+, with an AP equal to the victim's armor saving throw (i.e. a space marine would cause an AP 3 blast, while a termigaunt would cause an AP 6 blast, and units with no armor save cause an AP - blast. Note that additional wounds caused by blast do not trigger more blasts.
This power is extremely dangerous, and if the psychic test is failed, the Librarian will take the hit instead

For a full explanation of rules for the experimental codex. Please comment or ask for more information on the 40k Wartrukk group. Hope you all enjoy.

Battle Report IV: Heretic v. ZerkeX

VS

A battle between Underground Heretic and ZerkeX. Points total was 2000k, and they played a special scenario from the Battle Missions book.

Please excuse the background noise, and a few errors on my part. Also, at one point a picture is referenced from the 40k Wartruck, but I'll post it here so you can all get a good chuckle out of it.

Cheers!

Battle Report III: Loki v. ZerkeX

VS

This Battle Report will follow a similar Picture based Style to the previous as they were done on the same day. We will most likley be returning to a video style in the coming reports, but as of right now this is our best and only real option to get reports out to the world.

Black Templars
Marshal Irons (Helbrecht) with command squad in LRC
3 Rhino Crusader Squads
Venerable dreadnought

Space Wolves

Logan Grim
2 Wolf Guard Terminators in Drop Pods
Long Fangs
Grey Knights in LRC

Game: Capture and Control
Set Up: Dawn of War
First Turn: Loki (Templar)

Set Up

Nothing on the table but the Emperor's Champion with a 9 man squad in a lonely Rhino. The wolves hold their units in reserves hoping to hit the field in a glorious shock and awe tactic.

Turn 1

The Forward Rhino with the Champion deems best to hold position and wait for the bulk of the crusaders to arrive at their side before advancing.

The Wolves move Long fangs into a ruined manufactorum on their extreme left. While a crusader filled with the Knights of the Daemonhunters move cautiously up the center, a Wolf Lord lands on the Templar's right flank to hit a lone rhino advancing up alone.

Turn 2

The Templar Move up the center to counter the Daemonhunters before they can make use of their superior skill and wargear to bare.

While the lone rhino falls back in an attempt to force the Woven Terminators to follow them away from the main force of the Crusaders. The Wolfs take the bait, but now the squad is forced into solitude against the Fenrisian Guard, who quickly destroy the holy Rhino with the strength of Russ.

Turn 3

After firing all weapons and receiving aid from the Venerable dread once more, the crusaders fell two the the Fenrisian Gaurd. With their numbers lowered, the Templar assaulted with righteous Zeal against a Wolf Lord and his Guard in a bloody fight leaving the two sides locked in close combat for a turn.

Across the field, Heavy Fire from the Wolves brought down yet another Holy Rhino of Marshal Iron's Crusade, this one belonging to Godfrey, the Emperor's Champion.

Along with the loss of the Rhino's Protection, the Marshal now faced implacable Terminators arriving from orbit via Drop Pod. And with Grey Knights awaiting orders to attack in the hull of a mighty Land Raider... the battle looks ill for the Crusaders, and songs of Glory would soon sound in the great halls of the Wolves.

Turn 4

As Godfrey lead his squad to the charge to fulfill his sacred duty, Marshal Irons stepped forth from the doors of the great crusader, the two squads opened fire on the terminators lead by the great wolf himself, then charged with the zeal and hatred of all who stand before them. After a great battle, only a wounded Logan and Arjak stood in defiance of the crusaders.

While the great battle raged on, the Venerable Dreadnought used his expertise in Tank Hunting to bring down the mighty Daemonhunter Land Raider, leaving the knights of the Inquisition to the mercy of the Crusaders.

Though the battle turned in the favor of the Templars mid field, the crusader squad laid down their last lives to the Wolf Lord and Guard. Though victorious, the squad was badly wounded, and far from any help to their wolven brothers. The Crusader's sacrifice was no in vain.

The end of turn 4 brought the final judgment of not only The Great Wolf Gimnar and Arjak... but the horse they rode in on was felled when the Drop Pod was destroyed by the might of the Sergeant's Power Fist.

Turn 5

With the Grey Knights exposed, the might of the crusaders open fired on the holy warriors, removing all trace of their once majestic presence with ominous silence.

While the crusader squads moved up, the crusader rained vengeful fire upon the wolf lord and his Guard for the fallen crusaders.

After seeing the Grey Knights fall, the Long fangs opened fire upon the Mighty Venerable Dreadnought, but were unable to crack the skilled opponent's mighty hull.

Turn 6
The battle continues with a roll of a 5

Having taken refuge in the final remaining Rhino, the crusader squad mounted up and ran for the Wolfen Objective, killing a few Long Fangs with the mighty fire of the zealous Dreadnought and the command squad.

Though having lost the battle, the wolves did manage a small victory, by escaping the fate of all Heretics. The Wolf Lord and his Guard made it free from the fire of the Crusader before it could bring it's vengeance to bare.

Game ends on a 1.

Final Score:

Templars - 1
Space Wolves - 0

Battle Report II: Heretic v. Ishmael

+++++TRANSMISSION INTERCEPTED+++++

Aun'ki'Fi'rios, it is with my deepest apologies that I must inform you of the continuing fighting on Ke'Shan. The gue'ui made planetfall in an uninhabited region of the planet, but quickly made their way into the ruins of a gue'la city, perhaps searching for some relic. Upon entering the city, I discovered five statues that had escaped prior detection. They resembled the gue'ui of Ishmael, but emitted an energy signature of who's nature my technicians were unable to discern. Regardless the gue'ui brute Ishmael seemed intent on having them so I believed a confrontation to prevent him from attaining to be in order. The account of the battle follows. The warlord aligned his forces in a tight pack, with his, vindicator I believe is their term for it, and battlesuits in front of his transports. A wise move as I sought to disable his transports. He placed a massive and hideous warmachine, defiler is their name I believe, behind an orbital cannon. As per your wise council Aun'Ki, I deployed my forces with my shas'la furthest from the gue'ui, with my piranha skimmers closer and I led by broadside brothers from the safety of a crater. The cadre's hammerhead was deployed opposite myself and looked to decimate the flanks of Ishmael's assault.

Here is a flyover image of the battle as it commenced, for your consideration.

As the battle began, Ishmael's forces advanced toward myself and my broadsides, with the vindicator deploying smoke and one of their battlesuits committing fratricide with his large fusion weapon. If this is the quality of our opponent, I am sure the Greater Good will triumph in the end.
Having fought gue'ui many times in the past, I knew it would be futile to attempt to destroy the vindicator while it was obscured by a cloud of smoke so I sent the piranhas to slow the armored column's advance while the broadsides and I attempted to dismantle their transports. While the gue'ui armored column advanced on my right my hammerhead and shas'la advanced to my left, creating a circular fight and hoping to lure only one group of gue'ui toward themselves at a time.

As the battle progressed, the warlord advanced his forces under the cover of more smoke, as my broadside pilots showed their lack of recent practice by failing to destroy a single vehicle. Showing their resolve in the face of the loss of their sisters, the crew of the piranha Swift Strike swept behind the column and destroyed the demolisher cannon of the vindicator. Assaulted by foul beasts, the Swift Strike deemed it wiser to withdraw than continue attacking the column.

As one team attempted to secure the far statue on the left flank from a deformed pair of obliterators, the other three showed a group of gue'ui the power of a united force, reducing their vaunted power armor to smoking piles of slag. However on the opposite flank, another team of gue'ui assaulted and disabled the broadside team I had recently disengaged from.

As the battle progressed, the gue'ui battle suits moved to assault the shas'ui teams after disabling their devilfish. Ishmael bypassed myself in search of the shas'la on the near left flank. The Swift Strike moved to contest the central point, pursued by the warp creatures summoned by Ishmael. It is my sad duty to inform you that two crisis pilots were lost to a mishap, but the other team landed near and killed three gue'ui.

While I was preparing to destroy the statue closest to myself to prevent it falling into the hands of the gue'ui I was called away to another battle as the warlord had sent one of his lieutenants to attack another sector and I was forced to prepare defenses there. The statues have fallen into Ishmael's hands, but my technicians have attempted to sabotage some of them so they will detonate when any attempt to investigate them is made. They were only able to sabotage two but they gathered valuable data on the energy source that will aid us later in this campaign. I await your judgement. Shas'El'Mel'ek out.

Battle Report I: Loki v. Heretic

With the spread of the Tau Empire in the Eastern Fringes of the galaxy, it was only a matter of time before they would reach the Rynnstar System. Deep within the heart of the system lies Rynn's World, the Agriworld home of the Crimson Fists. Entrusted with the defense of the great chapter home world, Captain Jurgen Reltih of the Crimson Fist Second Company fights to defend the planet from the mobile scouting forces of the Tau.

Near the city of Vargus lies the Planetary Defense Platform "Leopold", a fusion cannon capable of destroying ships in deep orbit around the planet, lies in waiting. The Tau scouting forces, using their superior technology, slipped past the defense scanners of the Crimson Fists, and were tasked with the Silencing of Leopold to create a hole in the planet's defensive grid. In order to do this they would have to secure the surrounding area to complete their mission.

Scouts of the space marine chapter reported Xenos reaching the surface, and approaching Vargus from the south. Figuring Leopold to be the true target of the Tau, Reltih mobilized as quickly as he could, risking the second company's only two Land Raiders in order to get to the cannon before the Tau in order to establish a defensive perimeter.

Now the two forces clash for supremacy of the area around the Platform. If the cannon falls, it is likely the Tau Empire will be able to slip more forces onto the planet. Will the Tau be able to achieve there mission and secure the drop zone? Or can the Crimson Fists hold the line and the defenses of the proud chapter's home world?
